It's not that I don't understand the concept, It's that you're logic is flawed in so many ways. (again, it's probably those prebuescent hormones) For starters, people rarely kill enemies or open chests for these rare items, they pay other people for them, like splurging for a make-over. Which of course all goes to equiping their character for the E-peen race, which you could directly call a beauty contest.

Considering Anet prides themselves in having a skill > time/equipment based game, the "upgrades" you're talking about don't actualy exist. A 125g collector sword has exactly the same stats and functionality as your 100k+XXXe req9 crystalline/eternal blade.
People don't buy these armors and weapons to "upgrade" anything but their outward apearance, and because GW offers no high level reward aside from cosmetic changes and apparel.

Nearly every rare item in this game comes from slain enemies and chests. The fact that people buy and trade their items for ones they prefer don't change this. The prestige of a weapon doesn't have anything to do with the looks but in the difficulty of obtaining it. A tormented weapon may not be sightly at all but the prestige of the item comes from saying you beat DoA. Stormbows, chaos axes, and zodiac weapons are all linked to conquest of elite areas and are spoils of war.

No, the e-peen race exists but its not about looks its about taking a trophy from a defeated foe and saying I been there and done that, its about titles and emotes as well. E-peen is basically saying I can play the heck out of Guild Wars its not about beauty.

GW has a policy of 'pay once'.

So I would agree with a 'customization kit' if it was paid once, and once paid, it would be available forever inside the game (Probably as a new NPC in each Event Town)

But I will NEVER, EVER agree with a 'pay each time' micropaiment feature.
I will agree with 'Pay once', and 'Pay once' ONLY.

Ah , I get it - If I have a cool weapon, its because Im showing off my victory spols, not my e-peen of beauty. Awsome! I am teh 1337 vanquisher of the sacred realm of Ebay - all bow to me OOOPS! No wait I reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly earned these tormented items on my lv1 Wammo.
